Klaus Uwe Ludwig sets out to find the most appropriate organ sounds for two of Johannes Brahms’s most popular orchestral works. Ludwig is fully justified in pointing out that Brahms’s own organ works tend to be inspired by Baroque models and thus do not represent stylistically adequate models. Ludwig’s transcriptions of the Academic Festival Overture and the Haydn Variations consistently retain the articulation of the orchestral scores and generally closely follow the source; moreover, the original orchestration is also often indicated in the music text.
