Description

Commissioned by Maurice and Sheila Millward, Man and Bat is a large-scale work for baritone, string quartet, double bass, and piano. Skempton’s music perfectly reflects the rich, varied, and at times frenetic narrative of the text, a poem by D.H. Lawrence, with voice and instruments alike contributing to the characterization. The first performance was given by Roderick Williams and Ensemble 360 at a Music in the Round concert on 20 July 2017 in Upper Chapel, Sheffield.
