Composer’s Note:

The first of this set of seven short works for Brass Quintet is an arrangement of a piano work of mine, a “three voice Quodlibet” based on three Slovak folk themes: “Šarkezy” – “A ja taka dzivočka” – “Ej, padá, padá rosička.” The second is based on a Czech folk song, presented firstly as a canon, then as a mirror shape. The third is based on a Lithuanian folk melody I transcribed from field recordings released on the compact disc, “Lituanie – Le pays des chansons” issued on the “Cocora, Radio France” label, in 1997. The original recordings were made between 1958 and 1995. The fourth is an African American folk song, and I transcribed it from a field recording found on a Smithsonian-Folkways album, although I can’t remember which one (there are several versions). This was based on one of my works for solo guitar. The fifth is based on a melody written by Lorenzo di Liuto, a Renaissance Italian composer for lute. I also used this melody in my symphony. The sixth is a modern setting of a melody by early Renaissance composer Johannes Okheghem. The final folk melody is from “The Rough Guide to Scottish Music, Second Edition” as performed by a folk group, Cliar, on a World Music Network compact disc. This last melody also made an appearance in my symphony.
